Cancellation/Deferment Options for Teachers

Teachers serving in a low-income school or subject-matter shortage area may be able to have their student loans cancelled or deferred.

Teacher Cancellation Low-Income Directory

Teachers who taught in a school serving students from low-income families may be eligible for loan cancellation. To be considered a "low-income school," the school must be in a school district that qualified for federal funds in the year for which the cancellation is sought. Also, more than 30 percent of the school's enrollment must be made up of children from low-income families.

The Teacher Cancellation Low Income Directory is an online database which can be used to identify elementary and secondary schools with a high concentration of students from low-income families.

Teaching in a Designated Subject Shortage Area

Full-time teachers who taught in designated subject shortage areas may qualify for loan cancellation. Shortage areas are determined annually in each state by the state education agency. The designated subject shortage areas for Louisiana are listed below.

Note: Full-time teachers of science, mathematics, foreign language or bilingual education may qualify for loan cancellation even if these subjects are not listed below.
