Suicide Prevention

During the 2008 Regular Session of the Legislature, lawmakers approved the Jason Flatt Act (219). The Jason Flatt Act requires two hours of annual in-service training for school teachers, school counselors, and principals on suicide prevention. In-service training can include self-review of suitable materials; however, due to the sensitive nature of this subject, a district or school may prefer to conduct group in-service training facilitated by a mental health professional with competency in suicide prevention and intervention.

Click on the link below for online suicide prevention training. The training includes two modules. The Department strongly recommends use of Module 1 for increasing the competency level of school personnel in suicide prevention. If your school or school district is interested in conducting a group in-service training, a free copy of the online suicide prevention training is available on DVD along with a facilitator's guide. Call the Jason Foundation at 1-888-881-2323 or visit their website at www.jasonfoundation.com for the DVD and facilitator's guide.

Please note there are other resources available to fulfill the requirements of Act 219. Additional online and other resources are coming soon!
