Louisiana's Critical Goals

In 2010, with the aim of focusing our work on achieving stated outcomes, the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) adopted nine Critical Goals. In January 2011, the Department presented reports on the progress the state is making in meeting these critical goals.

To see how your district is progressing towards these goals, select a district from the following list:

1. Students Enter Kindergarten Ready to Learn

Measure: Percentage of Kindergarteners meeting Benchmarks on beginning of year DIBELS screening
Ultimate Goal: 75% of Kindergarteners on Benchmark
Immediate Goal: 50% of Kindergarteners on Benchmark by 2012-2013

2. Students are Literate by Third Grade

Measure: Percentage of third graders earning Basic and above on iLEAP English Language Arts Assessment
Ultimate Goal: 90% of third graders earn Basic and above on iLEAP
Immediate Goal: 72% of third graders earn Basic and above on iLEAP by 2011-2012

3. Students Will Enter Fourth Grade On Time

Measure: Percentage of students earning consecutive promotion from Kindergarten through fourth grade
Ultimate Goal: 90% of students arrive in fourth grade on time
Immediate Goal: 75% of students arrive in fourth grade on time by 2014-2015 (Revisions of  goal target underway)

4. Students Perform At or Above Grade Level in English Language Arts by Eighth Grade

Measure: Percentage of eighth graders at Basic and above on LEAP English Language Arts Assessment
Ultimate Goal: 90% of eighth graders earn Basic and above on LEAP
Immediate Goal: 75% of eighth graders earn Basic and above on LEAP by 2013-2014

5. Students Perform At or Above Grade Level in Math by Eighth Grade

Measure: Percentage of eighth graders at Basic and above on LEAP Mathematics Assessment
Ultimate Goal: 90% of eighth graders earn Basic and above on LEAP
Immediate Goal: 70% of eighth graders earn Basic and above on LEAP by 2013-2014

6. Students Will Graduate On Time

Measure: Cohort Graduation Rate (percentage of  students graduating in four years)
Ultimate Goal: 85% of students graduating in four years
Immediate Goal: 80% students graduating in four years by 2013-2014

7. Students Will Enroll in Post-Secondary Education or Graduate Workforce-Ready

Measure: Percentage of first-time freshmen (high school graduates enrolling in post-secondary institutions)
Immediate Goal: 55% of high school graduates enrolling in post-secondary institutions by 2016-2017

8. Students Will Complete at Least One Year of College Successfully

9. Students Will Achieve All Eight Goals, Regardless of Race or Class

  • All programs and activities should strive to improve student outcomes, regardless of race or class
