After-School and Extended Learning Programs

Supplemental Educational Services

The Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program offers low-income families options to improve their child’s education.   Parents with students in Title I schools can enroll their children in SES to receive extra academic help, such as tutoring for students, in the subjects of reading/language arts, mathematics, and science.  SES also provides English language proficiency for students with limited English proficiency (LEP).  This help can be provided before or after school and during the summer.

So who is eligible for SES?  Generally, a student is eligible for SES if he or she is eligible for free or reduced lunch and attends a Title I school identified by the state as “needing improvement” for 2 years or more.  In Louisiana, those are schools in their second year labeled as Academically Unacceptable Schools (AUS2) or School Improvement 2 (SI2).
What is a Title I School?  To qualify as Title I, a school typically has around 40% or more of its students from families that qualify under the United State Census's definitions as low-income.  Click here to see if your child’s school is a Title I school.

By federal law, SES must be provided to eligible students at Title I schools that are at least in their second year of being labeled as Academically Unacceptable Schools (AUS 2) or School Improvement 2 (SI 2).   Additionally, all schools entering school improvement for the first time—either AUS 1 or SI 1 must also offer SES to their students per state policy.  Click AUS orSI to see if your child’s school is on either list.

For more information on enrolling your child in SES, contact your school’s guidance counselor or your local school district.  They can not only arrange and offer the supplemental services, but notify parents and students of the availability of SES.  School districts may also help parents choose a provider, if requested, enter into an agreement with providers, protect the privacy of students who are eligible for or receive SES, and prominently display on its website the number of students who are eligible for and participate in SES.
